Performance pay does in fact work brilliantly to do what it's designed to do. For instance: "Recently a joint survey of 13,000 teachers by the National Union of Teachers and Association of Teachers and Lecturers has suggested that mostly the system just beats teachers down." Mission accomplished! So our rubric for the performance pay thing is (I swear I am not making this up) set up to rank you as a "Division 1", "Division 2" or "Division 3" (like what levelof college would recruit us if we were an athlete, get it?) teacher based on these criteria (again, not making this up): flexible, enthusiastic, team-"orientated" (yep, it's on official documents), loves to be around kids, knows their place, willing to improve. Oh, and one more: "content and teaching knowledge", but we've been told that everyone gets top marks in that one because, well just because. Presumably because it doesn't matter.

What could go wrong with such a totally objective rating system? We've already been rated by this rubric for two years and, big surprise . . . coaches of popular team sports are the only Division 1 teachers. There is a handful of state and national award winning teachers in my building (I am one). We speak up at staff meetings and try new things in our classrooms that invite parent phone calls. I'll bet you can guess what division we are all rated. Dave Eckstromhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13521336850803352134noreply@blogger.com
