I appreciate both of your points of view -- and think it might be possible *both* to stand our ground *and* to seek understanding. Makes me think of @DebMeier's powerful example through the years. And I can't lose sight of @DianeRavitch's repudiation of former beliefs, which gives me some measure of faith that others may 'come around.'<br /><br />This, in turn, makes me think, of one conversation with a He-Shall-Go-Nameless privatizer. It hit me -- in a way that never would have occurred to me in print, online, on a panel, etc. -- that he *really believes* that vouchers, turnaround schools, high-stakes teacher evaluation, and related policies will "restore" (his kind of word, not mine) opportunity and access to learners who have been marginalized in our society. He *really believes* that schools can/should/will be held responsible to address racial and macroeconomic inequities in the broader society. *I* find his ideas to be counterfactual, counterintuitive, and just plain absent any objective correlative, evidence, or precedent -- but I realized in that one conversation that maybe (and it's really a 'just maybe') that belief in the ultimate end/purpose/goal might be the anchor that turns the tide for all of us. I haven't the foggiest idea what this would look like, or how this might happen... I guess it just gave me a moment of blind hope that the shared belief in present inequities -- regardless of the incompatibility of world view, strategies, or tactics to address them -- might lead to more generative action amongst all of us.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03245884052189321560noreply@blogger.com
