The person with the One Right Answer or the millions of people who flock to him because they are conditioned to believe there is One Right Answer?

Does a decade of bubble testing cultivate independent critical thinking skills?

Just another example of the "collateral damage" caused by the chronic evaluation culture we live in.Kobishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16778054056084383752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-77413922040179282122016-03-20T13:48:39.058-04:002016-03-20T13:48:39.058-04:00Here here. What is always amazed me is the we hear about the need for teachers and curriculum to conform from the same mouths that want us all to celebrate diversity. I love it when the reformsters don't recognize their inconsistencies. It was one reason I retired earlier than I had anticipated.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16596143841112032475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-90277391676204392092016-03-20T13:20:44.616-04:002016-03-20T13:20:44.616-04:00In my early years of teaching I was too structured...In my early years of teaching I was too structured, too organized; lessons and activities were too perfect. Over the years I realized that a little planned cognitive dissonance was much better for students. Because, "that's the way the world really works".

The over-reliance on textbooks also has a "one right answer" problem. They rarely help students to understand how the real world really works.

NY Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06584135103498426410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-59365162059623156012016-03-20T12:48:04.288-04:002016-03-20T12:48:04.288-04:00Preach on, brother! Even in mathematics, while there may only be one correct solution, there are many ways of getting there and success in mathematics comes when we teachers allow students to make sense of problems in ways that make sense to them. 2 + 2 = 4 because that is how we defined those numbers. In an alternate world, it could be 1 + 1 = 3 if those numbers were defined in a way that would make it true. As a math teacher, I do not require students to solve a problem in one particular way. What I ask of my students is that they solve a problem using what they know, explaining each step of their solution, and defending their answer. The only sad moments I have is when I have to require them to do it a certain way because some stupid BS test will have it no other way and I would not have them fail that BS test because the people who wrote it and the people who promote it are too rigid.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03544213160574214282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-6062346553803605192016-03-20T12:24:54.109-04:002016-03-20T12:24:54.109-04:00Starting when my kids were little and even now sin...Starting when my kids were little and even now since they still need babysitters, I've always tried to have them spend time with different caregivers without my being around specifically so that they get the idea early on that there are different ways of doing things, different rules, different expectations, different things you can get away with, etc.

Also, I've always thought that there should be a program such that when a woman finds out that she's pregnant for the first time she (and her parenting partner, if relevant) spend varying amounts of time shadowing other mothers (and fathers). Parents of young kids, older kids, one kid, lots of kids. Conservative parents, liberal parents, younger parents, older parents. Again so that you get the idea that, whether you agree with other people's parenting style and beliefs or not, other parenting styles at least work - kids don't die just because their parents do things differently than you would do.

And, yes, you're right, it's ridiculous for all teachers in a school to have the same standards or grading system. If Little Johnny can figure out the Mom and Grandma do things differently, he can certainly figure out that Ms. Smith and Mr. Jones do things differently.Diennehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04570040547158789834noreply@blogger.com
