One way to begin to make college more affordable would be to look at where the money is being spent. More and more colleges and universities are operating as if they were private businesses, and this has lead to (1) administrative bloat and (2) an amenities race where schools try to lure "customers" with their climbing walls, wave pools, and new luxury-style student housing. These things are expensive, and this is a "success" only for those in the student debt industry.

There ought to be an additional disclosure requirement in higher education (akin to the Clery Act) where a college or university must provide a pie chart showing how $1 of tuition money is actually spent. Perhaps state schools should be required to provide a second pie chart showing how $1 of tax money is spent.

How much of each dollar paid toward higher education actually goes toward instruction? I can assure you the majority of that money certainly isn't paying professors who teach. Yet, student debt continues to climb along with the salaries of CEO wannabe types who are increasingly prominent in higher education administration.

- Joe NashvilleAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-68936891265068184132019-04-23T10:41:10.150-04:002019-04-23T10:41:10.150-04:00I hope and trust that Beth sent this to Miami. Such a good university can be creative and find the ways to be even more supportive of deserving students who cannot afford such a high tuition plus expenses. Very proud of Beth and eager to see where she goes and what she does in years to come.Gary Gruberhttp://www.garygruber.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-22637375025429216932019-04-22T19:41:50.309-04:002019-04-22T19:41:50.309-04:00My son attends Miami. We love the school but knowing that his student loan debt will be larger than most mortgages is very scary. I am not changing anything in his room because I know he might be back even with a decent job after graduation.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10300629156964484735noreply@blogger.com
