This is special just for teachers. Even under Right To Work, other unions are not similarly constrained.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05168566567751854277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-79577209022348984162017-02-18T15:42:53.680-05:002017-02-18T15:42:53.680-05:00Dave,

No one dogs the firefighters and the police unions because you will have an immediate disaster if they go on strike - fires won't be put out, murders won't be investigated. And, you can't replace them easily with a bunch of scabs.

You can fake it for a while with teachers. You can hire substitutes. You can hire untrained teachers who might only be able to do the job half as well as the regular teachers. In the long run your kids will end up as dumb as a box of rocks but at least the cities aren't burning down and the people aren't shooting up the neighborhoods.

I also think the sexist angle has a lot of merit.

DWDDWDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18410063427689693237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-36724490727350237932017-02-18T09:47:26.092-05:002017-02-18T09:47:26.092-05:00This is what happened in my state (WI) 6 years ago...This is what happened in my state (WI) 6 years ago. The result was massive early retirements, huge drops in people entering the teaching profession and now critical teacher shortages in some areas of certification. The response of our GOP legislature to these shortages is predictable and probably part of the plan all along--alternative pathways to licensure that encourage people who are not professionals (read "cheaper") to join the teaching workforce.

Shawn Cornally, one of the best teachers in Iowa (or probably anywhere) wrote a scathing response on his blog here: http://bit.ly/2llO4uP I have followed Shawn's work for a while and it is usually very positive, technical and solution-focused. To see what he wrote as a contrast to what he usually writes paints a good picture of how this feels to teachers and why this kind of legislation kills public schools (which, sadly, is probably the point.) Teachers are the least paid but most educated of any of the unionized occupations? Nobody dogs the Firefighters or Police unions...sure there are some problems come contract renewal time, but it's always quickly resolved. I guess everyone wants their house fire extinguished or the burglar arrested? When it comes to kids, I guess people just think of them as second rate citizens since they are "property" of parents. They are just collateral damage? The parents are expected to make the kids into exceptional people? I just don't get it.....graduate from college with a teaching degree in debt for >$80,000 and starting out making avg $36,000 and people/politicians want to make teachers out to be the bad guys? edblisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01792046029260177146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-19266251159297507452017-02-17T07:33:40.720-05:002017-02-17T07:33:40.720-05:00Pretty close to the law in Michigan. The whole idea is to reduce union negotiation possibilities, then render unions with little to do , watch membership decrease and then proclaim that given a choice people will opt out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
