Not only have tenured/tenure-track faculty salaries only sort of kept up with inflation over the last 20 years or more, butpoorly paid, benefit-free adjunct faculty positions across the country have exploded precisely because they cost less. And because adjunct faculty who can be fired at will are less likely to confront managerialism, but in many cases because it's a *cost-saving* maneuver. College was sold as the "way to get ahead," and anyone who didn't go to college was a loser. The feds stepped in with low-interest student loans that, we were all assured, would be easily paid off with the guaranteed high salaries which would come after graduation. And the better the school you could get into, the more clout you would have in the job market, thus the more money you would make... so go ahead and splurge on that fancy private school if you are allowed behind the velvet rope.

And while we were at it, the "college experience" went from living in a spartan dorm and eating mac-and-cheese to living in a well-appointed condo and eating at Chipotle. Hey, if you're borrowing the money, what's a few more bucks to have a good time?

Faced with inelastic demand from a customer base that would borrow any amount of money it took to obtain their product, colleges did the rational economic thing and raised prices. Over and over and over. And all that money went into paying for armies of administrators and Taj Mahal campuses. Instead of competing on academic merits, schools competed on amenities, which are really, really expensive.

So the whole "how things used to be" narrative vis-a-vis the minimum wage just doesn't cut it because the current situation has nothing -- zippo -- to do with how much money kids make in the summer or doing part-time work.
Lauriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12078429793941848242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-49174148011388904092014-08-19T18:24:30.263-04:002014-08-19T18:24:30.263-04:00What does this remind us of:
