Does make me think of an interesting question though-- I think of public schools as being an expression of a national policy about education, but charters as being singular and unconcerned with national education policy. To me that's one of the critical differences-- public schools are an expression of the intent to educate all students, and charters are not. Now I have to go think about how well that holds up on examination. It doesn't matter if that's not important to the parents; it obviously has to be the focus of educators. What I'm impatient with is the tacit demand for True and Only Accountability. Those of us on the reforms side of the aisle haven't put enough points on the board to impose our preferred flavors of accountability on our own side, let alone yours. That's not the same as "trust the teachers and send more money" or "let a thousand flowers bloom and the market will sort it out." But if you're looking for folks interested in discussing forms of accountability *other* than testing, you'll find me a receptive audience. But this line raised my eyebrows:<br /><br />"Charter schools have innovated and excelled by aiming at select groups of students, abandoning the whole goal and purpose of public education."<br /><br />Hold on there. Aren't you committing the same sin as Greg Richmond? You're telling us the True and Only Purpose of Pubic Education. I'm pretty sure you will find parents of students in your very own school who would not judge your success or failure on how you're doing educating *every* child. I'll bet there are a lot who would say, "Well, I really don't think much at all about the "whole goal and purpose of public education." They probably worry mostly about how their kid is doing in school. Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04376800134547710398noreply@blogger.com
