First of all thanks for sharing the information with us. Social Emotional Learning programs are designed to help individuals develop their emotional literacy and empathy, and this will help us learn what we can do with Social Emotional Learning programs. What can we do? How can we help you build a better life?
For example, you can take a look at UNESCO MGIP, they write very well about ,Social Emotional Learning, I am very impressed with the way they share thoughts on the subject.Ravinder Thakurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07220182232313548440noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-14592093351591277672018-09-19T08:59:58.528-04:002018-09-19T08:59:58.528-04:00thanks for sharingthanks for sharingAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05208399947032382651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-37354159421941819022018-01-27T13:14:45.920-05:002018-01-27T13:14:45.920-05:003 years ago, my child was in 9th grade Honors Engl...3 years ago, my child was in 9th grade Honors English. The entire grading rubric was NOT English, but GRIT (Guts, Resilience, Integrity, and Tenacity). So, personality and behaviors, instead of teaching kids to read Shakespeare and to write. They had to show "constant improvement." That meant they could never do their best work and turn it in. If they did a great job the first time, they got a worse grade, than if they started out low and improved.
So, instead of doing their best, these 14-year-olds quickly learned to purposefully misspell words and to write awkward sentences, so that when they "fixed" their work, there would be "evidence of growth." Also, group participation played in strongly for the grade. So, you could be a beautiful writer and an introvert, but you wouldn't get a good grade in English if you didn't want to be outgoing in class. THANK YOU, Peter, for taking this on! This is THE BIGGEST Problem with our education system. It is no longer about what knowledge is of most worth. It is about what kinds of humans do we wish to create. And the definition of "we" is never the parents and the local teachers. Dystopian fiction is less frightening than our current reality. As a private tutor now who teaches math, reading, and writing, my heart breaks for kids who really just want to learn how to solve a math problem with efficiency and accuracy, read a passage with comprehension, or write with an essay with clarity and accurate writing conventions.

My conclusion is that our country's education is a sparkler with bright spots flashing here and there but a vast darkness is in the space around those sparkles. Those bright spots will likely produce the entrepreneurs and leaders, but those leaders will have to hire employees from the darkness.

I confess that even though I would put a "100" on your written insight about SEL, my continuing question for all such articles is, "HOW DO WE STOP THIS TAKEOVER?" Give me a list of workable steps that a citizen can take against these mobsters in charge of education That is, HOW DO WE CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF EDUCATION IF OUR CULTURE HAS BECOME THE OVERWHELMING SOURCE OF THAT DIRECTION?

Let's admit it, as the comic character Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16925459324011735405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-53640080708818560512018-01-25T14:15:36.769-05:002018-01-25T14:15:36.769-05:00"What is the necessary business of the school..."What is the necessary business of the schools? To create eager consumers? To transmit the dead ideas, values, metaphors, and information of three minutes ago (on the historical clock)? To create smoothly functioning bureaucrats? These aims are truly subversive since they undermine our chances of surviving as a viable, democratic society. And they do their work in the name of convention and standard practice. We would like to see the schools go into the anti-entropy business. Now, that is subversive, too. But the purpose is to subvert attitude, beliefs and assumptions that foster chaos and uselessness." [Parentheses mine] The above quote is from one of the more daring "teacher" books of the past century, Teaching as a Subversive Activity by Neil Postman and Charles Weingartner. When I decided to leave my career in industry in the early 70's and join my wife in teaching this book became my manifesto. It is still relevant, although a bit dated today, and I would recommend those considering a career in teaching, as well as those already engaged, to give it a read. Those of you who have already been influenced may want to give it a new look. This does not pertain specifically to what Peter has presented here, but touches on much of what he has been blogging for a good deal of time.Tom D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/10908843209293739872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-1279293842210287772018-01-25T13:14:38.266-05:002018-01-25T13:14:38.266-05:00Oh, ew.

I've had my son take a few pictures and send them to me. They are always given right before a big test. Imagine what the class discussion was/is prior to these Growth Mindset assignments? I can tell you that it's not about Algebra, but my son can't record in school
Learning About Growth Mindset (worksheet)
3 things I learned about having growth mindset:
2 things I have a question about:
1 thing about having a growth mindset that I want to learn more about:

There was another picture that didn't transfer over when I got my new phone and that one was really strange.
You can't "teach" SEL! And we have lockstep Algebra in HoCo too, in fact for years, we have had lockstep curriculum county wide and that's why our test scores have always been so high. HoCo teaches to the test to game the system (especially with MSA) and the parents are perfectly happy with that because it makes them feel good to be on top.edblisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01792046029260177146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-74404039595808221792018-01-25T06:51:10.375-05:002018-01-25T06:51:10.375-05:00You've got me curious now - what DO they look ...You've got me curious now - what DO they look like?

Over here in MoCo we're all about lockstep Algebra.CrunchyMamahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14434606158400653601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-19239377603988196112018-01-24T17:53:24.292-05:002018-01-24T17:53:24.292-05:00You should see what some of my son's Algebra h...You should see what some of my son's Algebra homework/classwork looks like....and I'll give you a clue that there is NO math involved. I threatened school admin and the teacher with a trip to a school board meeting if this continued. My son is instructed to take pictures of these SEL worksheets if they are presented to him. My child is now exempt from all SEL assignments.edblisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01792046029260177146noreply@blogger.com
