In such a case, I would want somebody to present both sides of the argument fairly and allow me to make up my own mind.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04846132962226635250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-45017021284663078002018-05-05T10:37:07.834-04:002018-05-05T10:37:07.834-04:00Standards confine, constrain and limit *students*
...Standards confine, constrain and limit *students*
Standards de-emphasize student judgement, expertise and creativity
Standards, invetivably become compromised and therefore tend to be bland and boring, leading to generally no deep *student* learning
standards linked to testing are a punishment for *students*.

People of any age who are chronically assessed and categorized are living the nightmare of institutionalization. People who are institutionalized are detached.

Darwin scratched an itch with his theory of evolution. The part about "survival of the fittest" is proven every day in classrooms across America. If you are inclined to academic pursuits, school is bearable. For most of mankind, who don't care about Faulkner and cosigns, and can't pretend to care, they had better get used the idea that they will be slapped with a label that indicates some level of inadequacy. If a young adult life starts off with feelings of inadequacy because she doesn't get As, Bs or even Cs in English and trig, she might as well find a crowd of people to share in her humiliation. After all, we all know that the ones who get the top grades are the most beloved and honored people. Probably taking pictures of oneself in provocative poses and getting hundreds of "likes" can fill the gap? "I may stink in school, but I have puffy lips."

If we are to defy Darwin's grim reality of the "survival of the fittest", we need to de-institutionalize the institution of public education. No one will do it, because it is too radical, and furthermore, data and money control all the decision making. Meeting individual people's needs in real time can never be adequately assessed on a comparative scale. Compliance is the key word: students must comply, teachers must comply, school districts must comply. COMPLY! or LOSE!
No matter how warm and fuzzy the teacher, we all know that in the end, it is comply or lose.

We used to enjoy watching Wild Kingdom with Jack Perkins. Watching our young people struggle for survival (emotionally, psychologically) is no fun at all. We all end up turning our eyes away in pain. We turn the channel. I agree it's not useful to assume people are stupid, but evil? Sometimes, yes. Having spent half of the Obama administration thinking that Obama just had to be misguided and misunderstanding educational issues, I finally woke up to the fact that he wasn't misguided at all. He was willful. Similarly, DeVos isn't simply misguided, nor does she just have a different but equally valid view of the situation.

I guess we could quibble over the word "evil", but I can't think of a better one to describe anyone who wants to disrupt and dismantle public education and sell off the pieces to their wealthy friends for kickbacks.Diennehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04570040547158789834noreply@blogger.com
