Discipline though, will not by itself produce the change we wish in our schools. There is need for changes in teacher workload which would give her time to speak with parents and to see better what the child needs. There is also need to improve a teacher training which might be better than what presently exists. Giving teachers more autonomy in the schools they work at might also contribute to the improvement of education. Indeed one factor cannot in itself give us the change we wish for, but whatever happens, it seems that education should remain in the hands of the people and not be given over to big business. eltron34https://www.blogger.com/profile/03397567117777545434noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-47329812174129582082017-11-30T14:10:24.469-05:002017-11-30T14:10:24.469-05:00If any of these pundits would like to talk with a ...If any of these pundits would like to talk with a national board certified (middle childhood generalist) teacher with a masters in Science Education who taught in a middle to upper-middle class, 85th percentile and above school for 16 years, then moved about 30 miles south to, by choice, work in a 100% free lunch, mostly second language learning school, I’m available!wizard lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06646651793517883138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-47087209292122875732017-11-29T12:12:14.398-05:002017-11-29T12:12:14.398-05:00Gotta love these white dudes who think poor childr...Gotta love these white dudes who think poor children of color need some tough discipline to overcome the terrible parenting they experience. It's like the disgusting hedgehog Whitney Tilson, who supports "no excuses" abuse of children of color by glibly saying, "Because they need it." In an idealistic world I could envision a Microsoft running a school that attracts students interested in computer science. To be honest I don't understand why Mr. Gates, who seems to have all these "innovative" education ideas, does not do just that instead of foisting them on public schools only for them to fail i.e. V.A.M.

Poverty is an issue, but poor kids doesn't mean they do not have potential. Just as rich kids does not mean they are all bright. There are a variety of questions with even more answers, I feel it has more to do with priority.

The best teachers are not necessarily in the best schools. At the moment I am spending time at one of the best schools in Manhattan. The kids are great, brilliant in fact. I've seen little in the way of great teaching however. Seems the author doesn't implicitly blame teachers, but it's there.

I went to private school because my parents believed in a Catholic education. Reflecting on my own schooling, most of the teachers were ok, some not very good and a few were amazing. Coupling that with my time teaching, I can't imagine much has changed.Highly Effective King Clovishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14653858157695141774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-45290758764283820942017-11-21T18:46:59.610-05:002017-11-21T18:46:59.610-05:00Democracy is bad for minorities.
