In the particular case in the comments ...Fizzicks,

In the particular case in the comments that I linked to, public school teachers testified to the following....

"One high school teacher said she consistently had to reteach evolution to Mr. Freshwater’s students because they did not master the basics. Another testified that Mr. Freshwater told his students they should not always take science as fact, citing as an example a study that posited the possibility of a gene for homosexuality.

“Science is wrong,” Mr. Freshwater was reported as saying, “because the Bible states that homosexuality is a sin, and so anyone who is gay chooses to be gay and is therefore a sinner.”

A third teacher testified that Mr. Freshwater advised students to refer to the Bible for additional science research."

Teacher with Bible Divides Ohio Town by Ian Urbina
NYT, January 29, 2010

Teachers routinely claim that they counsel out poor teachers, so if that is true they somehow they are able to make these judgments of who is a poor teacher and who not. Perhaps all the claims of counseling out poor teachers are false.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-59743186052297079802016-11-20T23:35:22.745-05:002016-11-20T23:35:22.745-05:00Dear God in heaven's name econ...
Working tea...Dear God in heaven's name econ...

Working teachers in this country DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT PLANNING TIME TO EXECUTE THEIR OWN CLASSES MUCH LESS SPEND TIME HELPING EVALUATE OTHER TEACHERS!!!! Where in the F do you think we live? Finland or Deutschland?

I have little faith in the ability for peer evaluation because that would be ONE MORE MF'ing BURDEN WHICH WE WOULD NOT BE COMPENSATED FOR!!!!

There is one thing I learned long ago as a 19-20 year-old pro musician: Do NOT do anything for 'publicity' or 'you will get something in return' or 'this is a great cause' etc, etc. Because the more one does for free, the less respect you get as a professional. THAT is what is wrong about teaching in the USA. Teachers have been doing way too much for free.

In the post secondary world, instructors do NOT try to lecture, instruct, etc, for 5-7 hours in front of students EVERY FREAKING DAY!!!!

Until dipshits (I gotta agree with Trump about JEB) like JEB & the RHEE idiot really understand the demands of public school teaching in terms of the shear workload even in the BEST circumstances, nothing of real consequence will improve. fizzicks numbershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01913370100937432939noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-35509541594486365982016-11-20T20:16:34.547-05:002016-11-20T20:16:34.547-05:00I had long thought that the best way to evaluate t...I had long thought that the best way to evaluate teachers is peer evaluation. That is what is done in the post secondary education, where the faculty typically votes on tenure, promotion, and raises for their colleagues.

The scales fell from my eyes with this post on Dr. Ravitch's blog: https://dianeravitch.net/2012/08/15/is-this-a-failing-school-with-great-graduates/comment-page-1/#comment-24161 .

To save you the trouble of clicking on the link, I will reproduce the surprising opening statement given by an experienced K-12 teacher: "One must be very careful in speaking up about one’s colleagues. It is unprofessional to do so unless there is evidence that the colleague’s actions are bringing immediate harm to students."

That statement, not contradicted by the many thousands of teachers that apparently read that blog, gave me a deeper, and much less favorable, understanding of how most teachers view their professional obligations to their students. It is unprofessional to criticize incompetent teaching because the harm is not immediate.

Because of this statement, I now have little faith that K-12 teachers will be able to evaluate each other in a useful way. I think this view is shared by others, which is why alternative measures of evaluation have been popular.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-145754798491629362016-11-20T20:12:40.024-05:002016-11-20T20:12:40.024-05:00Unless something has changed, Chicago has a teache...Unless something has changed, Chicago has a teacher residency (in the Chicago district of your school) requirement.Kobishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16778054056084383752noreply@blogger.com
