It seems to me that when public education began in this country, most people worked on farms; then people worked in factories. People really didn't need education for either of those jobs. So it seems like the purpose of education was never job training. It must have been more so that people could become contributing democratic citizens. But I guess that means we need to hear from the extremists to gauge where the balance lies. %&*$$Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01638646078223591586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534665086749553287.post-24891515187680759652016-02-11T08:19:27.803-05:002016-02-11T08:19:27.803-05:00Progressive education is commonly portrayed as the...Progressive education is commonly portrayed as the opposite of traditional education on the issue of rules, but this isn't really true. Progressive education is not loosey goosey anything goes no rules. It's a matter of where the rules come from. Traditional education imposes rules from the top down because the authority in charge said so. Progressive education is about exploring where rules come from and why they need to be imposed. Usually the kids create the rules in a democratic way. Almost invariably they come up with the same basic rules that revolve around respect and safety because they understand that's what it takes to make a community work. The rules the kids come up with aren't all that different than the rules the adults would impose, but now they have an understanding and an internal commitment to stick to the rules.Diennehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04570040547158789834noreply@blogger.com
